'CHAPPAQUIDDICK'

Prop. 13 targeted by proposed California ballot initiative

...Prop. 13 limited property taxes to 1 percent of a property’s cash value and capped increases at 2 percent per year, allowing reassessment of a property’s value and a larger increase in its owner’s tax bill only after it changes hands or new construction is completed. The incipient measure would change that for commercial property.

“Why do they need more money?” Coupal said of state officials. “To spend it on something stupid like high-speed rail?”...

The Trump Doctrine: American Interests Come First

Even if the pledges were met the deal would be useless

A common argument against the Paris agreement has been that the “pledges” to cut emissions are only that: promises, targets, hopes. There is no way to enforce them, or even to verify them in many cases.

Another common argument, highlighted in Trump’s speech but made since long before, is that even if the pledges were met the deal would be useless. According to this view, China, India et al are not even putting up with the charade of trying to reduce emissions. Their emission targets are what you’d expect if their economies and energy systems continued their historical experience; in other words, their “target” is equivalent to doing nothing. Most hilariously, Pakistan’s INDC simply stated its emissions would peak at some point.

(Proponents of the agreement have usually countered this argument by putting their hands on their ears and ceaselessly screaming “I HEAR NOTHING”)...

Not so fast. House to re-vote on GOP tax bill

...Democrats say some technical elements of the House bill violate Senate rules. In order to comply with those rules, the Senate will have to remove those elements from the bill. That will make it necessary for the House to vote again Wednesday on the final final-version of the bill....

...Several provisions in the House-passed overhaul appear to violate the procedural rules of the Senate, according to Democrats, and the Senate will need to vote on whether to waive the rules and keep those provisions in the bill, which takes 60 votes. Republicans will most likely lose those votes, striking the contested provisions from the bill and changing the language of the legislation. After the bill gets a final stamp of approval in the Senate, the bill will return to the house for a revote, likely Wednesday morning.

One possible violation involves the use of 529 savings accounts for home-schooling. Another possible violation exempts colleges from a new endowment tax if they have fewer than 500 students paying tuition. Another objection appears technical in nature, as the bill repeals a section by its number, instead of the title of the section.

So it looks like the drama won’t end tonight. The White House was reportedly planning for a signing ceremony tomorrow. It’s not clear if that will now be postponed because of the House re-vote.

It seems clear that Iran is either seeking to test Mohammed bin Salman, or to kill him.

Democrats had blown up bipartisanship long before they opposed the Republican tax plan

The same CA progressives complaining about Republican tax reform because of the federal deficit turn a blind eye to the massive pension debt here.

Brace yourself taxpayers: CalPERS is about to bury you deeper in debt.

The nation’s largest pension system is expected to adopt a funding plan this week that anticipates shortfalls during the next decade and then banks on exceptional investment returns over the following half century to make up the difference.

It’s an absurd strategy designed to placate labor unions, who want more public money available now for raises, and local government officials who are struggling to make annual installment payments on past debt CalPERS has rung up.

And it highlights why the California Supreme Court, which is currently considering a key case on pension rights, and state lawmakers must do more to rein in public employee retirement costs. We can’t afford the current system....

Trump Has Made Our Government More Moral

...I hated Trump. I thought he'd be a disaster or, at best, a mediocrity. I was wrong. He's done an unbelievably great job so far.

But even more important is my second assertion. Our government is more moral now. How is this possible when Trump has sex with Vladimir Putin disguised as a Russian prostitute, when he kills and eats black people in his spare time, when he hates women and goes into insane temper tantrums fueled by 48 cans of Diet Coke a day?

...Trump has made our government more moral by making less of it: fewer regulations, fewer judges who will write law instead of obeying the law, fewer bureaucrats seeking to expand the power of their agencies, less money for the government to spend on itself. He has made government treat us more fairly and equally by ceasing to use the IRS and Justice Department for political ends like silencing enemies and skewing elections.

This is what moral government looks like. And if every male senator in America is grabbing the buttocks of some unsuspecting female while, at the same time, voting for more limited and less corrupt government, the senators are immoral, yes, but the government is more moral. That is why we should never let the leftist press game us with scandal hysteria, but should keep focused on voting in those who will help fulfill government's moral ends.

...Despite being in office only a year, President Donald J. Trump has had a string of important achievements, but it is the flavor of those successes that is remarkable. Considering that Trump always hovered around the political center — and sometimes the center-left — during his 50 years in the media spotlight, as president he has led a series of quite conservative campaigns. He’s eliminated hundreds of Obama’s destructive regulations, pumped up the economy, effected a directional change to the right in our court system, returned the country to a more U.S. focused foreign policy, and likely swung a tax cut (which appeared to be only days away at the writing of this article).

For conservatives, even if for the next four years Trump decides to just coast on his first year’s achievements, he has already justified his election and earned your vote. But, all signs point to him continuing these campaigns as his presidency rolls onward, so if you are a conservative, you are must realize that you have been vindicated if you voted for the president....
