Trump, for his part, is sharpening the needle he uses to stick it in the eye of the Democrats at every turn. He nominates a businessman to be secretary of State, ardent opponents of Obamacare and environmental regulations to lead HHS and EPA, an ambassador to Israel who wants to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and annex Palestinian land in the West Bank, and drains the swamp with Goldman Sachs.
This is one helluva honeymoon. Trump's polling numbers are up from high thirties approval to 47 percent — but with a 51 percent disapproval, he is upside down. Did Putin impact his election? Is this what we are going to be talking about? How about things like jobs, security, allies, spending? Campaign 2016 is not over. Can Trump flip the switch and move forward?

...even after we acknowledge the obvious differences, there’s are inconvenient questions that won’t go away: Do we really want local officials to pick and choose which federal laws they like and which ones they don’t? Which ones they’ll enforce and which ones they’ll ignore?
“What would San Franciscans do if conservative counties and towns followed their lead?” is what Victor Davis Hanson asks in a piece for National review. “Perhaps a rural Wyoming sheriff can now look the other way when he spots a cattleman shooting a federally protected grizzly bear or predatory timber wolf — or at least shield the cattleman from federal officials. Should public schools in Provo, Utah, start the day with school-wide prayers?”
And remember that evangelical country clerk in Kentucky who wouldn’t issue marriage licenses to gay couples, despite the Supreme Court decision declaring that laws against gay marriage were unconstitutional? Is that OK with progressives? After all, like sanctuary city liberals, she was only doing the right thing – as she saw it.
While we’re on the subject, that’s something conservatives who tried to turn that woman into a national hero might also want to ponder. If a conservative in Kentucky can do what her conscience dictates why can’t a liberal in San Francisco do the same?
Proponents of sanctuary cities – and even backers of the loony notion of modern day secession – are free, of course, to make their case. But opponents ought to remind our progressive friends that they’re not the only ones who have been certain in their convictions when it comes to matters of right and wrong.
Every day I hear some liberal somewhere expressing fear over the soon-to-be Trump presidency. Who knows what he’ll do, they say. What if he decides that he only wants to follow the laws he happens to support?
What if, to pick just one example, he decides that “unfair” federal environmental laws are bad for business and just plain ignores them? You can’t pick and choose which laws you’ll obey, they would scream. You can’t decide which laws are “fair” and which are “unfair.” What kind of country would we have then?
Bingo, my progressive fellow Americans.

We were also told, again and again, that things were going well abroad. The tide of war was receding. Afghans and Iraqis were taking the lead. Osama bin Laden was dead, and al Qaeda was on the run. And people again thought, That just doesn't seem right. As recently as this Tuesday, President Obama was still at it, telling troops assembled at MacDill Air Force Base (side note: polls suggest that a plurality in that room must have voted for Donald Trump) that, a few bumps in the road notwithstanding, things were going pretty well out there.
Characteristic of the head scratchers in Obama's speech was this howler: "No foreign terrorist organization has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland." Elsewhere in the speech the president cited the "homegrown and largely isolated individuals" who killed Americans in Orlando, San Bernardino, Boston, and Fort Hood, and who were "radicalized online." Never mind the fact that the Fort Hood terrorist exchanged a dozen or so emails with Anwar al-Awlaki, the American cleric who worked so hard to encourage American Muslims to murder their fellow citizens, or that al Qaeda and ISIS were actively calling for such attacks, and providing instructions for how to carry them out in their online magazines.
People listen to this sort of hairsplitting, and they think, that just doesn't seem right. One hears the president, during the same speech, praise the campaign against the Islamic State as "sustainable," and one can't help but wonder, since when did we want a military effort against a trumped up gang of women-beating thugs like this to be "sustainable"? Swift, yes; crushing, sure; but "sustainable?" How about "victorious"? How about "over"?

...Reid said that if there was a line in political warfare that he would not cross, he hadn't found it yet. Well, that's candid, if nothing else.
This is Reid's morality: Win, at any cost, by any means necessary. It's a toxic worldview, and his years as a Senate leader have poisoned the institution he professes to love....
These are but a few examples of Reid's amoral and disgraceful tenure. We could bring up other things, as when he called Obama's predecessor a "loser" and a "liar." We could mention the wealth he amassed in his decades of "public service", through investments and deals that again and again seemed to overlap with his activity as a legislator.
But what really makes Reid stand apart is his nihilistic pursuit of victory at all costs, with no regard for anyone else's good name, and certainly none for his own.
The Senate and political Washington are worse for Reid's service. We'll be ready to regret his departure from Capitol Hill when the nation no longer has reason to regret that he ever arrived there.
