After a bumpy start, GOP leaders seem to have found their footing — passing a historic $200 billion Medicare reform package, striking big, bipartisan deals on Iran, education and trade, and preparing to pass a GOP budget for the first time in a decade.
Now comes the hard part: keeping the momentum.
Deadlines to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank’s charter, raise the federal borrowing limit, renew the Patriot Act and replenish the highway fund are fast-approaching, and none of the issues will be simple to sort out.
For now, GOP leaders are in a hopeful mood.

Why SNL and Chipotle are more dangerous for Hillary than Benghazi and email-gate - http://t.co/HTm020ffMA
— Matt Lewis (@mattklewis) April 18, 2015
"Serious" stories about Hillary Clinton did not attract as much coverage as her failure to leave a tip at a Mexican restaurant, writes Matt Lewis
...The day after Mrs Clinton announced her presidential campaign, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, 43, who is young enough to be Clinton's son, made his own presidential announcement – a soaring speech which contrasted with Clinton in every way, casting her as his perfect foil. "Just yesterday," Mr Rubio gibed, "a leader from yesterday began a campaign for president by promising to take us back to yesterday. But yesterday is over, and we are never going back."
The funny thing is that some serious news involving Mrs Clinton came out this week, but has mostly elicited yawns. First, it was revealed that she had simply ignored congressional inquiries into her use of private emails during the time she was serving as Secretary of State back in 2012. Second, it was reported that the Clinton Foundation would continue taking money from foreign governments – even as Mrs Clinton officially ran for president of the United States.
None of these "serious" stories garnered as much coverage or commentary as her failure to leave a tip at Chipotle. This is both a commentary on the American public and the American media. But it's also a warning to Mrs Clinton about how it will be the little things that kill.

The Death of the Left
The Death of the Left http://t.co/uGGYyhRjHt Wow. A very hard-hitting but very truthful read from The Man Who Nails It - Daniel Greenfield.
— Kristy Lonestar (@luchadora41) April 16, 2015
The left is at its best when it’s trying to take power. It unleashes its egocentric creative impulses, it writes poems, plays and songs as its heroes die in doomed battles or pump their fists at protests. And then they win, get rich and fat, the people grow poor and the country becomes a miserable dictatorship. Try putting a 300 pound Che on a t-shirt. Or get inspired by Obama lazily playing golf.
...The left gains its ideological legitimacy from reform. But what happens when it becomes the entity in need of reform? Then reform dies and the word comes to be used as a euphemism for oppression. All the ideas die while the slogans march on like zombies. Radicals kill and then are killed. The men and women who used to fill the gulags, die in them instead. Lenin becomes Stalin becomes Khrushchev.
Before you know it, no one remembers why there was a revolution or how to get rid of it.
The American left survived its last round of victories by losing elections. It won while maintaining the appearance of defeat. Now it has both the appearance and the substance of victory. Maddened social justice warriors lynch-tweet their own over trifles as the revolution’s children devour its elders in search of someone to fight.
The left has won and victory is killing it. It’s a slow miserable death for it, and for us. If we win, then a defeated and revitalized left will go back to fulminating and ranting, plotting and scheming its way to a victory that will kill it. If its victory becomes permanent, a generation from now Cuban sex tourists with pesos will be visiting the Socialist enclaves of Berkeley or Boston for their child prostitution needs.

...About the most exciting thing that has happened to the former secretary of state in the last week—and this includes her announcement—is visiting a Chipotle initially undetected, and subsequently having pictures of her burrito-ordering leaked and posted online.
It’s all so dull, so bland, so scripted, so planned, so typically political. And perhaps, just perhaps, it’s what American voters deserve.
Americans want to believe that we’re a nation of risk-takers, pioneers, people willing to cast comfort and safety aside to achieve a dream, tell the truth, and change the world. Some of us still are those things, too. But in reality, a lot of us have become something else in recent years: narcissistic, overly-cautious, superficial, reality-disconnected, and above all, very, very boring....

Police: Muslims threw Christians overboard during Med voyage
Muslim migrants throw 12 Christians overboard in Mediterranean, police say http://t.co/prxyLpyxFj
— Geri Lafferty (@CapitalVA) April 16, 2015
◼ Italy's migration crisis took on a deadly new twist Thursday as police in Sicily reported that Muslim migrants had thrown 12 Christians overboard during a recent crossing from Libya, and an aid group said another 41 were feared drowned in a separate incident. - AP
The survivors said they had boarded a rubber boat April 14 on the Libyan coast with 105 passengers aboard, part of the wave of migrants taking advantage of calm seas and warm weather to make the risky crossing from Libya, where most smuggling operations originate.
During the crossing, the migrants from Nigeria and Ghana — believed to be Christians — were threatened with being abandoned at sea by some 15 other passengers from the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali and Guinea Bissau.
Eventually the threat was carried out and 12 were pushed overboard. The statement said the motive was that the victims "professed the Christian faith while the aggressors were Muslim."
◼ Italians revolt against migrant 'invasion' - The Telegraph
Italians are in growing revolt against the number of migrants arriving on their shores, with more than 10,000 people rescued from the Mediterranean in the past week alone.
The huge influx of asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa is putting an intolerable strain on a country that has been in recession for the past five years.
Conservative politicians called this week for boatloads of refugees to be sent back to Libya, while the system of migrant reception centres is on the verge of collapse.

◼ REMINDER TO MEDIA: HELPING HILLARY IS NOT YOUR JOB - John Hayward/BREITBART @Doc_o
The 2016 presidential race has only just begun, and we already have an unforgettable image for the history books: a pack of salivating reporters racing after Hillary Clinton’s taxpayer-funded “Mystery Machine” van, like a flock of pigeons chasing after scattered birdseed. Conservative humorist Iowahawk dubbed it “the stampede of the majestic North American Throne-Sniffers.”
...Here’s the thing, Media – it’s your job to remind Americans that Hillary’s under a thick cloud of scandal, and may end up under indictment, for running the off-the-books email server she was plugged into with that BlackBerry. It’s your job to remind American voters, over and over again, that Clinton jeopardized national security and deliberately violated transparency laws by doing this, and when she got caught, she looked the American people right in the eye and lied extravagantly and demonstrably about setting up her shadow server because she didn’t want to carry two portable electronic devices to check her mail.
That’s not a Republican “talking point” – it’s crucial to who Hillary Clinton is, and how she views herself in relation to the Little People. It says more about her arrogant view of the proletariat and disdain for accountability than a hundred speeches. She hasn’t “addressed” or “dealt with” the email scandal, and it’s not “old news.” In fact, we’re just learning today that Clinton was directly asked if she was running a private mail server by Congress in 2012, and both she and her Department blew off the question.... KEEP READING
Update, 5:00 PM EST: Will we have to abandon the American mainstream media entirely and turn to foreign reporters for real stories about Hillary’s Astroturf campaign? Over at ABC News, we’ve got a “senior national correspondent” slobbering over Clinton working off her shoe leather and winning over voters “one handshake, one chai at a time…” but the UK Daily Mail reveals her coffee-shop meetings are pure political theater, with her campaign staff actually driving activists, lobbyists, and Hillary groupies to sip those chai lattes with her.
Why bother with those extensively-funded mainstream media outlets and their high-priced on-air “talent” when you can get the same propaganda delivered straight to your inbox every morning by giving Hillary’s campaign your email address?

“The Republican primary is turning into a GOP NASCAR race, and the longer you wait, the more laps you’ll have to make up, as you try to take on the lead car,” said GOP strategist Ron Bonjean. “It would be wise for [New Jersey Gov.] Chris Christie and others to get in sooner, rather than later, because they risk getting dwarfed by others who are capitalizing on fundraising and infrastructure.”

Runner says the County has begun to add marijuana growers to the tax rolls by establishing a permitting and licensing process.
"They've got concerns with water permits, with business licenses with seller's permits and Humboldt County is doing good work trying to figure out how to bring those people into the normal business stream."

◼ Just in time for the 2016 primaries, Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul is getting his very own comic book. - T. Becket Adams/Washington Examiner
The comic book, which will be released Wednesday by Bluewater Productions, tells the story of the Kentucky senator who, along with his father, former Texas congressman Ron Paul, has attracted libertarian-minded voters to the GOP by staking out positions on many key civil-liberty issues, including federal surveillance programs, mass incarcerations and drone strikes.
"Though his short time as the Senator of Kentucky hasn't been without some controversy, Dr. Paul has made an indelible mark on politics," said the publishers of the comic.

Peggy Noonan: Hillary Clinton’s announcement followed by her dark-windowed SUV journey into deepest darkest America was the most inept, phony, shallow, slickily-slick and meaningless launch of a presidential candidacy I have ever seen.
...Two points on the general feel of the 2016 campaign so far.
One is that in the case of Mrs. Clinton we are going to see the press act either like the press of a great nation—hungry, raucous, alive, demanding—or like a hopelessly sickened organism, a big flailing octopus with no strength in its arms, lying like a greasy blob at the bottom of the sea, dying of ideology poisoning.
Republicans know—they see it every day—that Republican candidates get grilled, sometimes impertinently, and pressed, sometimes brusquely. And it isn’t true that they’re only questioned in this way once they announce, Scott Walker has been treated like this also, and he has yet to announce. Republicans see this, and then they see that Mrs. Clinton isn’t grilled, is never forced to submit to anyone’s morning-show impertinence, is never the object of the snotty question or the sharp demand for information. She gets the glide. She waves at the crowds and the press and glides by. No one pushes. No one shouts the rude question or rolls out the carefully scripted set of studio inquiries meant to make the candidate squirm. She is treated like the queen of England, who also isn’t subjected to impertinent questions as she glides into and out of venues. But she is the queen. We are not supposed to have queens.
Second point: We have simply never had a dynamic like the one that seems likely to prevail next year.
On the Republican side there is a good deep bench and there will be a hell of a fight among serious and estimable contenders. A handful of them—Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Rubio, maybe Bobby Jindal—are first-rate debaters, sharp advancers of a thought and a direction. Their debates, their campaigning, their oppo geniuses, their negative ads—it’s all going to be bloody. Will the American people look at them in 2016 and see dynamism and excitement and youth and actual ideas and serious debate? Will it look like that’s where the lightning’s striking and the words have meaning? Will it fortify and revivify the Republican brand? Or will it all look like mayhem and chaos? Will the eventual winner emerge a year from now too bloodied, too damaged to go on and win in November? Will the party itself look bloody and damaged?

How long can Hillary Clinton hide? http://t.co/r0ggSBRHEd
— Jennifer Rubin (@JRubinBlogger) April 14, 2015
The most dramatic contrast between Hillary Clinton and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) may not have been in their announcements, although Rubio’s live and inspiring speech was certainly different from a polished video in which Clinton barely appeared. The real difference, and the challenge, for Clinton came afterward.
She was driving being driven to Iowa and making small talk ignoring people at a fast-food restaurant. Since she said nothing about any issue and merely identified with “everyday” people, each tidbit of exceptionally not-everydayness brings smirks. As Politico noted, “Clinton’s new campaign manager, Robbie Mook, has instructed his staff to adopt a humble, underdog’s posture, but it’s been hard for Clinton and her rich, powerful family to shake off some of their gold rust. As the new candidate was rumbling across the gritty byways of Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio — stopping to gas up and scarf Chipotle — daughter Chelsea was gracing the cover of Elle in pricey Cartier jewelry, her hair blown into a glamorous corona by a wind machine. And Clinton’s friends told The Associated Press that the former first lady had made her final decision to run while vacationing at the waterfront mansion of her dear friend, the fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.” This, however, was her choice. She could have said something of substance, given a speech and sat through interviews on meaty matters. Live by the gimmick, die by the gimmick, I suppose.
Rubio gave a speech, a really good one, and also sat through a lot of interviews — with ABC, NPR and Fox.
...In sum, he can easily navigate through policy issues because he knows what he believes and has no qualms about saying it. Clinton, on the other hand, is apparently still trying to figure out what she will be saying, so naturally any substantive interview would be hard. Moreover, any interviewer worth his or her salt would soon start grilling her on the e-mail scandal, the foreign countries’ donations to her foundation and her wealth.
But here is the question: What happens when Clinton can no longer hide in a van and behind sunglasses at a Chipotle? At some point, she will need to say what she thinks and sit through probing interviews. What’s she going to do then?
