You'd Be Forgiven For Confusing The Clinton's Fundraising Network For a Spider's Trap. Questions about Hillary's ethically ambiguous blend of money arise

'Testy' like a fox: What's behind Rand Paul's argument with the media?

Distrust for media is apparently shared by more than just right-leaning voters, according to Gallup, meaning Paul likely has little to lose by challenging reporters. - T. Becket Adams/Washington Examiner

...Paul's rejection of journalists' questions also drew high praise from people whose influence in conservative media could sway Republican opinion toward the freshman senator.

"Hey GOP: Rand Paul just took an abortion question, gave a good answer, and sent Democrats spinning their wheels on defense. Pay attention," Commentary magazine's Seth Mandel noted on social media.

The Federalist's Mollie Hemingway penned an article titled, "Finally! Rand Paul Exposes Media's Serious Abortion Double Standards."

As the media establishment fumed over Paul's lack of deference to employees of NBC and AP, conservative blogger Stephen Miller joked, "Man, sucks for [Paul]. People really love and trust reporters. Campaign over."

This last point — that Paul's aggressive style with reporters won't hurt him for the simple reason that voters already dislike media – may be the key to understanding the senator's combative interview behavior....

Ted Cruz has an opportunity to transform the #Obamacare debate. Will he take the chance?

FRONT LINES IN THE MARIJUANA WAR

How would legalization impact California’s Emerald Triangle? - Peter Hannaford 4.6.15

Last November District of Columbia citizens voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana, joining those of Colorado, Washington state, and Alaska. Since then debate continues about where and when it’s okay to ingest the weed, how to regulate and tax it, and the moral implications of approving use of a drug that is illegal under federal law.

In the District it’s a war of words. In California, many of the combatants are armed and dangerous. Statewide, the forces for legalizing marijuana have teams armed with clipboards and pens to gather signatures to put the issue on the 2016 ballot. They also take every opportunity to proclaim the certainty of victory. A similar proposition was defeated four years ago, but most national polls now show a majority of Americans favor legalization. Whether they actually favor it or are merely inured to it, the polls do not tell us.

In northwestern California the daily war is intense and fought on three fronts. This is the the Emerald Triangle—Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties—where, aficionados say, some of the world’s best marijuana is grown.

One front consists of streets and highways. The daily newspaper in the area’s largest city, Eureka, regularly reports routine traffic stops that turn up quantities of marijuana packaged for sale. As often as not, the driver is wanted for a parole violation.

The latest haul was bizarre. Two police detectives were crossing the parking lot of the area’s largest shopping mall when they spotted two suspicious vehicles and investigated. The vehicles contained a mobile lab for converting marijuana into hashish. The driver on hand had a knife and handgun. The lab on wheels contained processed marijuana as well as cans of butane, honey oil, and equipment with which to make hashish.

A second front involves several area law enforcement agencies that collaborate in raiding drug houses. Almost without exception, the raids yield marijuana plus assorted combinations of crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. Along with these are ledgers of customer names and transactions, cash, and weapons.

The confiscated drugs are destroyed and the cash forfeited to help offset the costs of law enforcement.

One term, probably uncommon outside the Emerald Triangle, is “home invasion.” It is common in places where marijuana is approved for limited use and where there is a big black market, such as this one.

“Home invasion” occurs when a deal goes bad. Either the seller is demanding payment, or a buyer is demanding promised product for money paid. In either case the “victim” brings along a friend or two (with weapons) and they force their way in to collect. Sometimes the invaders are beaten off; sometimes those they call on are injured; sometimes the invaders cart off other property to make up for whatever they came to collect.

The third front in the war is fought on a much larger scale: marijuana plantations. Several times a month, the drug task force raids a suspected illegal growing operation and seizes the plants there. These are not helter-skelter affairs. Most are in remote areas, some involve greenhouses, most have bulldozed new roads, diverted natural streams (disrupting fish spawning), and laced the ground with rodenticides that kill other wildlife.

It is not uncommon for a raided “grow” to yield as many as 10,000 plants. The plantations are staffed by workers from many parts of the world, many of them lacking papers.

Legal growers are filled with anxiety about what will happen to them if and when marijuana is legalized. These are the growers who supply people with have “215” cards permitting them to use marijuana for medical purposes. They can grow their own, or buy them from a certified grower or dispensary.

Growers, legal and illegal, agree that cannabis is big business in their part of the world. In 2011, a University of Washington study Jennifer Budwig estimated that marijuana counts for 26 percent of the annual $1.6 billion economy of Humboldt County alone.

Once it is legalized, the legal growers argue, big corporations will swoop in to dominate the market; illegal growers will continue to supply a black market, and the legal growers will be squeezed out. All this reminds one of the old maxim, “Be wary of what you wish for."

The left has grown stagnant and boring

Ever wonder why we here at Rare spend so much time criticizing conservatives? One of the reasons is that, while the right is brimming with ideas that are worth engaging, the left has gotten stale.

I address this liberal stagnation in ◼ my latest essay at the American Spectator:

The Obama era should have been a high watermark for American liberalism. Democrats in 2009 not only laid claim to the House, the filibuster-proof Senate, and the White House, but did so during an economic recession in which jobs vanished, wages shrank, and Wall Street was held in nearly universal contempt. Deregulation was out and stimulus was in. The table was better set for progressive ideas than at any time since the Great Depression.

Early on, liberals made three calculations that cost them dearly....

And that gets to the grand irony here. Liberals spent years sneering that Republicans were the party of no, out of ideas, deathly, dying, dead. This spurred conservatives and engendered a Great Awakening on the right the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Contract with America. It was liberalism that went bankrupt, with little internal dialectic and nothing to show but hatred, economic stagnation, and the same hoary tax-and-spend policies it’s been trying for decades.

That lack of originality is painfully evident at the state level. In Rhode Island, the governor is looking to enact a “Taylor Swift” tax on vacation homes worth more than $1 million. In California, legislators are mulling over cigarette and sales tax increases. This mad impulse towards profligacy is having predictable consequences. Of the top ten job-creating states in 2014, according to Gallup, seven were under total Republican control (it would be eight if Nebraska didn’t have a nonpartisan legislature). Of the ten states that created the fewest jobs, only one was under total Republican control and four were under total Democratic control.

These side-by-side economic comparisons—brought to you by federalism, another great conservative idea—have created a personnel shortage in the Democratic Party as voters toss out failed liberal governors. Consider that the Democrats’ presidential frontrunner for 2016 is Hillary Clinton, who’s been on camera without interruption since 1992 yet hasn’t held elected office since 2009. Consider too that her only potential challengers are a one-term senator from Massachusetts and a former governor from Maryland whose protégé was thrashed at the ballot box last year KEEP READING.

RUBIO CALLS ON CHRISTIANS TO ‘SADDLE-UP’ YOUR ‘HIGH HORSE’ - Pam Key/Breitbart

“Let me be clear with you about something, when we talk about radial Islam, we are talking about an ideology that millions of peace loving Muslims join us in condemning,” he continued. “We are talking about an ideology that prompts children to be buried alive and women to be enslaved and young girls to be ritually abused and innocent people to be executed at their desks for having the audacity to express the human right of free speech.”

“And so, Mr. President, if condemning that puts us on a high horse, I suggest we saddle up,” he added.

New Mexico’s Republican governor just ended civil forfeiture in her state

An exciting development in criminal justice reform: New Mexico’s Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has signed a bill that essentially ends the practice of civil forfeiture in her state. Cops will no longer be able to seize property merely on the suspicion of a crime.

The bill would require that residents be convicted of a crime before police seize their property, and would also funnel all seizure profits into the state’s general fund. This will block police departments from using seizures to pad their budgets, and precludes them from using the popular federal Equitable Sharing Program, which allows them to pass cases of to the Justice Department while pocketing the profits.

Obama’s Iran Deal Is in Serious Trouble

White House admits lying to Congress and America on Iran deal - RedState

Since announcing the nuclear weapons deal with Iran, we’ve documented numerous instances where Obama blatantly and callously lied about the substance of the deal in communications to Congress and the American people (see, for instance, ◼ here|here|here).

In the past three days other developments have taken place that demonstrate the extent to which Obama has lied about what the deal says. KEEP READING

This is the end of the road for Elizabeth Warren

For months and months (and months), we've ranked Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren as the second-most-likely Democrat to be the party's presidential nominee in 2016.

No more!

We are officially dropping Warren from our rankings of the top five(ish) Democrats who could win the party's nomination next year. There's a simple reason: We just see no way she will run. Yes, you could argue that Warren's lack of interest has been consistent. But six months ago, that "lack of interest" could have been just a public pose as she waited to see whether Hillary Clinton would make it to the starting line.

But, with Clinton ready to officially announce her bid Sunday, it's now abundantly clear that Warren isn't going to get into the race.

Ted Cruz trumps Rand Paul

Round one in the battle of anti-Establishment Republican presidential candidates goes to Sen. Ted Cruz. - David Drucker/Washington Examiner

In competition for the Tea Party's vote in 2016, the Texas Republican has bested Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky with a campaign rollout that GOP strategists say exceeded expectations and was almost flawlessly executed. Announcing for president two weeks later, Paul accomplished nearly the opposite, forcing a swift recalculation about which candidate is best positioned to win over the party's insurgent wing and vie for the nomination.

"Cruz had a superb rollout. He hit all the right notes," Republican guru Ed Rollins told the Washington Examiner on Thursday. "Paul had a disastrous rollout…He'll get back on track, but it was not a good first impression."

Ayatollah Khamenei Accuses WH of 'Lying,' Being 'Deceptive,' and Having 'Devilish' Intentions

While other Iranian officials have negotiated with Western powers over the mullahs’ nuclear program, Khamenei’s opinion is the only one that really counts. It is for this reason that Obama began writing directly to Khamenei early in his presidency. - Thomas Joscelyn/Weekly Standard

Earlier today, Khamenei broke his silence on the supposed “framework” the Obama administration has been trumpeting as the basis for a nuclear accord. Khamenei’s speech pulled the rug out from underneath the administration.

Khamenei accused the Obama administration of “lying” about the proposed terms, being “deceptive,” and having “devilish” intentions, according to multiple published accounts of his speech, as well as posts on his official Twitter feed.

The Great California Train Shortage - 10 Key things you need to know about the drought

The real failure of government policy is on water. For decades, policy officials have been predicting that California’s population would explode. (2) Now they are saying California’s population is expected to grow by as much as 33% over the next 20 years, in significant part because of Governor’s Brown’s policies that encourage end runs around our immigration laws.

At the same time, Governor Brown and other policy makers are trumpeting that climate change is depriving California of rain. (3) Of course, California’s boom and bust cycle of rain pre-dates climate change claims by thousands of years. We don’t have to go back that far to remember the drought of the 1970s – ironically during a prior Brown Administration – that occurred during a time when scientists warned of global cooling.

'We all know Obama is a narcissist, but this is bordering on the pathological'

Krauthammer RIPS Obama’s ‘Pathological’ Attack On Walker [VIDEO] - Al Weaver/Daily Caller

KRAUTHAMMER: No, I think this really helps Walker, of course. It’s not just a campaign story. This is a character story. I mean, we all know that Obama is a narcissist, but this is bordering on the pathological. Given the wreckage that he has left America’s foreign policy in across the world, and I could go through the list of countries but it would take up the whole segment from all the way from Mali to what’s happening in Iran and Iraq and Syria right now. For him to be condescending to anybody on how to conduct foreign policy is quite remarkable.

And if he is giving out advice, I think any president, a new president would be knowledgeable enough to, for example, this is one of hundreds — you would not want to tell a KGB thug like Putin that after my election I will be a more flexible because Putin, of course, understands all that and he has reacted accordingly. You have got a president who has left the United States in a position of more weakness, less respect, less trust of our allies, of respect of our enemies around the world, compared to six years ago when he came into office. I think he should be a little more humble when it comes to offering others advice.

OBAMA’S ‘HISTORIC’ IRAN DEAL FALLS APART, AS MULLAHS REV UP HIGH-SPEED CENTRIFUGES - John Hayward/Breitbart @Doc_o

The very thin fiction of Obama’s “historic” agreement with Iran is unraveling with amazing speed. It’s notable that the Iranians never felt any urge to play along with Obama, not even for a few hours. They were loudly announcing his spin on the deal was false before the sun set on the day the agreement was announced.

And now the Iranians are actively violating the terms of the agreement, which hasn’t even been formally written down or signed yet, according to the ◼ Times of Israel:
Iran will begin using its latest generation IR-8 centrifuges as soon as its nuclear deal with the world powers goes into effect, Iran’s foreign minister and nuclear chief told members of parliament on Tuesday, according to Iran’s semi-official FARS news agency.

If accurate, the report makes a mockery of the world powers’ much-hailed framework agreement with Iran, since such a move clearly breaches the US-published terms of the deal, and would dramatically accelerate Iran’s potential progress to the bomb.

Iran has said that its IR-8 centrifuges enrich uranium 20 times faster than the IR-1 centrifuges it currently uses.

According to the FARS report, “Iran’s foreign minister and nuclear chief both told a closed-door session of the parliament on Tuesday that the country would inject UF6 gas into the latest generation of its centrifuge machines as soon as a final nuclear deal goes into effect by Tehran and the six world powers.”
The Iranian officials reportedly told their Parliament such high-powered centrifuges were permitted under the Lausanne framework, no matter what Obama’s stupid talking points say. They didn’t use exactly those words, mind you, but it was pretty close in spirit.

Hillary's polling numbers wilting in swing states

Paul Blooms As Clinton Wilts In Colorado, Iowa, Virginia, Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll Finds - Quinnipiac University Poll
OLORADO: Paul 44 - Clinton 41
IOWA: Paul 43 - Clinton 42
VIRGINIA: Clinton 47 - Paul 43
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's lead is wilting against leading Republican presidential candidates in three critical swing states, Colorado, Iowa and Virginia, and she finds herself in a close race with U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky in each state, according to a Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released today. In head-to-head matchups, every Republican candidate effectively ties her in Colorado and almost all Republicans effectively tie her in Iowa.

Secretary Clinton has lost ground in almost every matchup in Colorado and Iowa since a February 18 Swing State Poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. The Swing State Poll focuses on key states in the presidential election.

Sharia in Action: Raped at 16, Afghan Woman Forced to Marry Her Rapist

The CNN article reports:
To be raped by your cousin’s husband; be jailed for adultery as your attacker was married; to suffer the ignominy of global uproar about your jailing and assault, but be pardoned by presidential decree; and then to endure the shame and rejection from a conservative society that somehow held you to blame.

The solution in this society? Marry your attacker.
What society is that? CNN never says. It’s a Muslim country ruled by Shariah law. Under Islamic law, a rape victim can make right her sin and restore the family honor by marrying her rapist.

This young woman refused to marry her rapist and was sentenced to 2 years.

She appealed and was sentenced to 12 years.

Afghan jails are filled with women who refused to marry their rapists.

Islam empowers women, don’t you know?

Cal Thomas says there's a little bit of Margaret Thatcher in #CarlyFiorina

The Anti-Hillary: Carly Fiorina impresses at a gathering of New York conservatives - Wall St. Journal

Ms. Fiorina may be among the longest of long shots to win the GOP nomination, but at Monday’s event hosted by the Committee to Unleash American Prosperity she demonstrated an impressive depth across a range of policy issues. The former tech executive chose to focus on the crushing burden imposed on small business by the modern regulatory state.

Her compelling tour of the landscape included unemployed farm workers left nearly hopeless after endangered species rules cut the flow of water to California’s Central Valley. She explained how the Federal Communications Commission’s new Internet regulations violate the FCC’s own rules and would succeed only in “crushing the little guys” trying to compete online.

And she noted that even before ObamaCare, health insurance markets suffered from stifling regulation at both the state and federal levels. “Let’s try the one thing we’ve never tried in health care—a free market,” said Ms. Fiorina. She then compared bureaucratized health systems to the vibrancy of the tech sector that constantly delivers more powerful products at lower prices.

Santa Barbara is set to reboot its desalination plant, as other cities look at building their own facilities.

A mothballed desalination plant sits like a time capsule near Santa Barbara's main tourist beach, a relic of California's last drought to end all droughts. - Mercury News

With its control room filled with dot-matrix printers, floppy disks and obsolete computers, the padlocked Charles E. Meyer Desalination Facility represents this quintessential California coastal city's once-fleeting hope of quenching its thirst by tapping the ocean.

Now, 23 years after it closed, with the state entering the fourth year of its worst drought on record, Santa Barbara is preparing to reopen the plant, rekindling a debate that is spreading to communities up and down the coast: Is the state's water shortage now so dire that Californians should embrace desalination -- with its high economic costs and environmental risks -- as a critical element of a pricier water future?

...The plant cost $34 million to build during California's last major drought in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But shortly after it opened in 1992, drenching rains returned. And because the water was so expensive to produce, the city shut down the plant three months later and sold its filters to Saudi Arabia. It has sat, closed, ever since.

Carly Fiorina blames "liberal environmentalists" for California drought:

Is the Drought Making Us Dumb? - Joe Mathews/Fox&Hounds

Untrammeled growth? Unbridled growth? Endless growth?

Good grief.

I’m a child of the first Brown administration—back in the ‘70s, which was already an era of limits. The California I’ve known for four decades is one of unmet infrastructure needs, limits on growth, limits on taxes and limits on spending. In Los Angeles, we have fewer payroll jobs than we did 25 years ago.

The only unbridled things this California sees are broad, overwrought claims about California somehow being “unnatural.” If only snow in the Sierras was as common as such claims.

The drought is a big deal. So is climate change. We are going to have to change how we live. We are already making some changes. But let’s not pretend this is the fault of some supposedly “endless growth.” One of the problems we face has been a lack of growth, of underinvestment in water infrastructure.

It’s a real question whether Californians are prepared to spend and invest in such infrastructure. And that question is not because of growth; it’s because Californians have been so skeptical of growth, and so determined to limit it.

California’s ‘man-made’ environmental disaster

The present crisis is not an entirely California-based; Washington also plays a role. In December, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would have pumped water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta into Central and Southern California, but it died an unceremonious death in the Democrat-dominated Senate. If the measure had passed both chambers of Congress, President Barack Obama pledged to veto it. Why? Environmental groups feared the threat it posed to the smelt.

“That’s the tragedy of California, because of liberal environmentalists’ insistence — despite the fact that California has suffered from droughts for millennia, liberal environmentalists have prevented the building of a single new reservoir or a single new water conveyance system over decades during a period in which California’s population has doubled,” said former CEO and U.S. Senate candidate from the Golden State Carly Fiorina. “There is a man-made lack of water in California — and Washington manages the water for the farmers.”

“President Obama goes out to California a little over a year ago, calls it a tragedy of global warming and hands out money to a food bank,” she continued. “This is all about politics and policy, and it is liberal environmentalists who have brought us this tragedy.”

Democrat Billionaire Tom Steyer Vows to Spend Big in 2016, Media Suddenly Not Concerned About ‘Money in Politics’

Where is the mainstream media? - Stephen Kruiser/PJMedia

The media pretends that the Left’s benefactors aren’t really that rich, you know. Nothing like the KOCH BROTHERS FINANCIAL BEHEMOTH. In this post alone, the writer lets Steyer’s NextGen PAC play coy about how much it will spend, while quoting a NextGen memo decrying “the Koch brothers’ unprecedented campaign spending…” In reality, Steyer spent almost $69 million more than the Koch brothers in the last election cycle.

But it’s the Koch name that everyone knows, because the media keep screaming it from the rooftops. Harry Reid spent much of the time he was getting his butt kicked by the mob (exercise bands, whatever) on the Senate floor accusing the Kochs pretty much influencing the entire electoral process in America.

Steyer’s name, on the other hand, is rarely mentioned in the media. He’s practically a publicity ghost. Hell, his name didn’t even make it into the headline of the Reuters post. They referred to him as “green donor.” In fact, the Koch brothers get mentioned twice as many times as Steyer does in the article, and it’s about him.

Tom Steyer is the $74 million elephant in the room and the press barely knows his name or acknowledges his existence.

Wise GOP presidential candidates would do well to mention him often.
