Brigham and Women's Hospital said it was treating 26 victims, while Boston Medical Center said it received 20, Massachusetts General Hospital was treating 19 patients and Tufts Medical Center received nine.
The injuries ranged from cuts and bruises to amputations, the Associated Press reported. Many victims suffered lower leg injuries and shrapnel wounds. Some suffered ruptured eardrums
Boston Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation scrambled to figure out the cause of the blasts. Police said Monday evening they had no suspects in custody.
Police Commissioner Edward Davis called the bombs "powerful devices" but declined to describe them or say whether the number of casualties was expected to climb.
A Justice Department official said Attorney General Eric Holder directed that "the full resources" of the department—including agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—be deployed to investigate the incident. The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Michael McCaul (R., Texas), said that "if this is in fact a malicious attack, those responsible will be held accountable.''
