The company already employs far more people in Houston - about 9,000 full-time employees and contractors - than it does in San Ramon. With a refinery in El Segundo (Los Angeles County) and oil field operations in Bakersfield, Chevron has roughly 10,000 workers throughout the Golden State.
..."It's important to reiterate that we are a California-based company," said Chevron spokesman Morgan Crinklaw. "We've been an important part of the state's economy and growth for 130 years, and we remain committed to this state."
...Chevron is the largest survivor of California's 19th century oil industry. The company traces its corporate roots back to the Pacific Coast Oil Co., founded by a small group of wealthy San Franciscans who purchased a well in Santa Clarita (Los Angeles County). The company's first refinery was based in Alameda.
