CFRW Legislative Alert

The United Nations, working hand in hand with members of the U.S. Senate, is hoping to have the treaty titled The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) ratified by July 26th. President Obama signed the treaty on July 30th, 2009.

There has been no real debate or consideration. This treaty addresses people with disabilities through an international bureaucracy which undermines the ability of families and communities to serve disabled people’s needs.

Senator Rick Santorum opposed the Treaty in a formal statement:
"The CRPD would usurp the rights and powers of parents here in the United States to do what is best for their special-needs child by placing the law of the UN about the rights of the parents. It is the job of our elected representatives to preserve these rights, not hand them off to unaccountable international bureaucrats."

There are more important items that should be on the Senate agenda. Any treaty with the United Nations needs a great deal of study and a lot of time.
