New UN Human Rights Council members have history of human rights violations

Doc Thompson lays out the new members of the UN’s Human Rights Council, and some of the names on the list are quite shocking given their poor human rights records.

For example, incoming member Burundi is in a the midst of a human rights crisis, according to Human Rights Watch. Furthermore, Saudia Arabia and Cuba, two of the other new council members, have been named by watchdog group Freedom House as among the 20 worst countries in the world in terms of human rights abuses.

“The worst 20, they said Cuba and Saudi Arabia. And they are on the Human Rights Council!” Doc exclaims. “They’re doing it wrong. They really are doing it wrong.”

Doc jokingly offers an explanation for this bizarre move: “Maybe if we put them on the council, then they’ll be like, ‘Oh, we’ve been doing it wrong. Oh, I’m really embarrassed that we haven’t been doing this. We’re going to change our act right away.'”
