Democrats can continue to indulge the fantasy that they “won” the popular vote and have broad based support, but that is not true. Take the votes from Los Angeles County and New York City out of the mix, and the plurality that Hillary supporters love to tout vanishes.
With his latest move in conspiring to secure the passage of a Security Council resolution condemning Jewish settlements, Obama has alienated a significant portion of the Jewish American voters who, until this betrayal, supported him. What is so puzzling about this move is that it was not provoked by a sudden surge of new construction in Israel. Nor was it tied to a negotiating strategy to somehow bring pressure to bear on Israel. The effect is the opposite. Israel, feeling more isolated and threatened, will become more entrenched and more stubborn.
The most interesting dynamic for me is that this boneheaded move by Obama is a gift to Trump, whose tweets decrying the failure to support Israel effectively kills the Democrat effort to paint him and his Administration a bunch of red-neck, jew haters. Moreover, this gives Trump an opening to talk turkey with Senate Dems who are also Jewish. So far, Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) have denounced Obama’s action. The only Jewish Senator in favor is Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)....
