Only 3 out of 10 voters surveyed wanted to see the race come to a quick end, while the rest wanted to see their candidate of choice soldier on to secure the nomination, even if it means that the primary contest will continue on for months.

Rick Santorum cruised to victory in the Louisiana Republican presidential primary on Saturday but still trails Mitt Romney by a wide margin in the national delegate count for the party nomination.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, was projected to finish second. Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich was third, but immediately rejected suggestions he should drop out. Texas congressman Ron Paul ran fourth.

Santorum had strong support in all income groups except for the very wealthy, and solid backing from conservative and religious voters in the Deep South state.

The underdog's big win in Louisiana renders ridiculous Romneyworld's demand that he step aside.

"We don't believe, as the pundits have said, that this race is over. We didn't get the memo," Santorum said. "We're still here. We're still fighting.… I'm not running as a conservative candidate for president. I am the conservative candidate for president."
